That sums up the key trends at the consumer-electronic industry's annual mega-bash, where form truly met function. Hundreds of companies this week showed off thousands of products, but the most interesting devices featured wireless access to the Internet and more attractive designs than ever before. The trend toward all wireless, all the time is not exactly new. Phone companies such as AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless have been talking about connecting all sorts of gadgets to their networks for several years. Yet only now are a slew of nontraditional devices hitting the market, some of which are so new, such as tablet PCs and bedside Internet viewers, that they could create categories of their own. "The technology is moving a lost faster than anyone ever expected," said Glenn Lurie, who is in charge of finding new devices to add to AT&T's wireless network. Just a few years ago, he said, device makers outside the mobile-phone business paid little attention to the idea. It's not just about adding devices to a wireless-phone network, either. Device makers are increasingly incorporating Wi-Fi to connect their products to home networks, and GPS is finding its way into more products.
