A group of researchers working for Verizon, Ericsson and Qualcomm say they have achieved a record 1.07Gbps download rate with LTE hardware.

The test was conducted in a controlled Ericsson lab and utilized 12 LTE streams on three 20 MHz channels of licensed Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) spectrum, alongside 4x4 MIMO and 256-QAM. The trial used all licensed FDD spectrum in three-carrier aggregation. Trial equipment included Qualcomm's Snapdragon X20 LTE modem and Ericsson's Radio System and LTE software.

"This is an important milestone on the path to 5G that will allow for better average speeds for all users and will drive new and exciting consumer experiences," said Mike Finley, senior VP and president of Qualcomm North America.

Gigabit LTE proves that even with 5G evolution already underway, 4G LTE will be the underlying mobile broadband technology for the masses for many years to come.
