US charges Facebook with violating housing law2019-03-28 18:09 by DanielaTags: Facebook
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is suing social media giant Facebook for allegedly violating the Fair Housing Act through its ad-targeting tools, which allow sellers to limit listings based on categories like race, sex and nation of origin. "Facebook is discriminating against people based upon who they are and where they live," Ben Carson, the housing secretary, said in a statement announcing the lawsuit. "Using a computer to limit a person's housing choices can be just as discriminatory as slamming a door in someone's face." HUD is asking for unspecified monetary damages and "the maximum civil penalty" against Facebook for each violation of housing laws. It said the charge will be heard by a federal administrative law judge unless any party requests the case to be heard in federal district court. On Thursday, Facebook said it was "surprised" by HUD's decision and noted the company had been working with the department to address its concerns. Facebook also said it has taken "significant steps" to prevent advertising discrimination. Read more -here-
