FBI wants to use an early-warning system based on material 'scraped' from social networks instead of manually monitoring social media sites. The agency is looking for companies to build the software that will scan social networks for 'danger' words – and agents will respond to 'breaking news, incidents and emerging threats'.
Since 2005, the CIA's Open Source Center has been monitoring blogs, chatrooms and social networking sites, as well as radio and television programs, according to documents released to the Electronic Frontier Foundation in 2010 following a Freedom of Information request.
