Facebook: Data Breach Affected 87 Million Users2018-04-05 14:47 by DanielaTags: Facebook
Facebook now says the data firm Cambridge Analytica gained unauthorized access to up to 87 million users' data, mainly in the United States. It was previously believed that around 50 million users were impacted by the data breach. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who is scheduled to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee next week, addressed the updated numbers in a call with reporters Wednesday afternoon. Zuckerberg explained that over the last few days, the company took stock of all of the people who used the thisisyourdigitallife app and analyzed the maximum number of friends they had during the period of time when the app was live. "We didn't put out the 50 million number. That came from other parties. We wanted to wait until we had the full understanding," Zuckerberg explained, adding, "I'm quite confident it's not more than 87 million." Facebook is facing its worst privacy scandal in years following allegations that Cambridge Analytica, a Trump-affiliated data mining firm, used ill-gotten data from millions of users through an app to try to influence elections. On Monday all Facebook users will receive a notice on their Facebook feeds with a link to see what apps they use and what information they have shared with those apps. They'll have a chance to delete apps they no longer want. Users who might have had their data shared with Cambridge Analytica will be told of that. Read more -here-
