On Monday, ministers from EU member states gave final approval to the common charger law which means that by 2024, electronic devices including mobile phones and tablets will need to support USB-C charging. Apple's iPhone uses its proprietary Lightning charger. Now, for the first time, Apple has confirmed that it will have to comply with this new regulation, despite the fact that the company still fundamentally disagrees with the basis of the new common charger regulations. Apple debuted the lightning connector almost 10 years ago and it has been the primary connector for many devices including the iPhone, the iPad and Airpods. Over the last couple of years, Apple has launched iPads using USB-C as the primary connector - including the latest baseline iPad. "Obviously we'll have to comply," Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide marketing, said at The Wall Street Journal Tech Live conference on Tuesday. "...we got to a better place which is power adapters with detachable cables. All of them being USB-A or USB-C and you choose the cable which is appropriate for your device. That allowed over a billion people to have that (lightning) connector and to be able to use what they have already and not be disrupted and cause a bunch of e-waste," Joswiak added. Joswiak did not say when Apple would introduce USB-C to its flagship smartphone but it would need to happen by 2024. Read more -here-
