Router speed drop solved

I've been lurking here for a while trying to solve my speed problem. Thanks to everyone for all the great tips, but I had to laugh when I finally figured this one out. Maybe someone else can use the tip:

I just got upgraded to Comcast 6Mbs, but was only getting throughputs in the 2-3Mbs range, with an occasional 4.5Mbs, and an occasional 1Mbs. Really frustrating. I tried all the tweaks here. TCPOptimizer is an awesome little program, and seemed to make some marginal, but inconsistent improvement. I got rid of ZoneAlarm since v5 seemed to cause a problem even though I had v6. No software firewall, and new software firewall: same problem. No antivirus software, and new AV software: same problem.

I have a Linksys BEFCMU10 (the original version) cable modem, and my main router is a Netgear WGR614 v1 wireless router. The wireless is turned on and used, but not for this connection. All the connections are wired Ethernet. Lot's of posters here have newer versions of those things, but my same problem. I considered buying new equipment, but it turns out that even this old stuff works perfectly, as you will see.

Going straight from the modem, I get full 6Mbs+. Through the router, it drops by half or more. During testing, I was cycling things on and off, switching the wiring when I finally stumbled on the problem. I was connected directly through the modem, but had the router turned on, and my speed dropped by half! I figured I had the wiring wrong or something, but nope, no part of my system was connect to the router. I have a homemade wood rack, and the router sits just above the modem. I could do a Speakeasy test wired through the modem getting 6Mbs, and watch the speed drop as I powered up the router.

So, the problem is: electrical noise! All the cables are shielded, and the power cords are segregated from the data cables, so the noise is coming directly from the devices. And low and behold, when I separated the router and modem by a few slots on my rack, I'm getting full speed minus about 10%, which is probably reasonable for router overhead and marginal residual noise. I imagine a lot of you out there have your router sitting on top of or below your modem. It's a stupidly simple solution (although it took me a week to stumble on it): if your having line speed problems, try separating your router and modem.

Hope this tip helps someone out there. And thanks for everyone else's help.

Let me just add one more - Holy Crap, Good Call. I've been through two routers and couldn't figure out why they were slowing everything down so much from a straight to modem connection. Picked the router up off the cabinet where I'd set it with the modem and instant speed return.

I have gone through 3 systems and 3 techies trying to get this up and going. Your solution rocks! I couldn't get the two far enough apart in my limited space so placed a foil tent over the router. It works like a charm. Thanks so much for the great advice. Never would have thought of it. Thanks for sharing!

The noise diagnosis was dead on. I separated the modem and router and presto I got the speed back. Thanks so much.

D-Link DSL modem, Linksys router,
Windows XP SP3
Pentium 4
Official Download speed: 15 megabits/sec

I installed NOD32 Antivirus:

dowload speed drops to 2 megabits/sec

I uninstalled NOD32 Antivirus:

dowload speed 15 megabits/sec again

What should I do?

I would like to use this antivirus.

and the download speed is about 10-12 megabits/sec

without the router and with NOD32 installed.

The RWIN suggestion worked great.

I was getting 1.8 Mbps through wireless router to Clear wimax. Wired ethernet was giving me 4Mbps.

The tweaktest on dslreports.net suggested some changes and using drtcp.exe - I set RWIN to 8000 and MTU to 1500.

I rebooted and voila! now my speed test shows 3.2Mbps sometimes even 3.6Mbps. Maybe some additional tweaks would help but this is good enuf for me.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! We have spent hours upon hours on the phone with our ISP and Netgear technical support trying to get decent speed on our computers and we came up empty. I upgraded my computer and got a wireless card instead of the adapter, but it didn't help. We recently bought a new router hoping that would be the solution, but it wasn't. I was surfing the web for answers when I came across this thread. We had our router sitting right on top of our modem, which, incidentally, is where the tech who installed it put it in the beginning. When we moved them as far apart as possible, we went from 2.0-3.0 Mb/s to 5.0-6.0 Mb/s. When we tried the aluminum foil tent, we increased it further to 7.0 Mb/s consistently!!!!! Thanks for giving us the solution that none of the techies could come up with.

Thank you so much! I have a DLink ADSL modem and a DLink wireless router. They look very similar so it was no question for me to place the router on top of the modem. After days(!) of reconfiguring the router I stumbled upon your article and it did solve the problem.
Before: 350 kbps (yes, k, not M!) - router on top of modem
After: 14000 kbps - router 1 m away from modem

Thank you!

Outstanding fix! Solved the same problem I was having with Time Warner Road Runner! Also want to add that when I moved the power cord for the wireless modem to a separate outlet in a different location from the power cord for the cable modem, the improvement was even more dramatic!
Thanks

THANK YOU!!!!! My husband I have spent MONTHS trying to fix network problems. We use Clear, and were getting good direct speeds, but our NetGear router cut it down to a fraction. We foolishly bought a new Linksys, but no luck. I stumbled upon this post, and voila! Can't believe that's all it took, but it's awesome. Who would have thought?

Thanks ! I was just about to start with the stress you went through but I stubled on your notes and it was right! THANK YOU

Oh yes so true!

Just need to find a solution for the cordless phone now when I found the problem :-)

I have been in SO ANGRY with my service over the last few months. I could not figure out why the internet on my laptop worked so well at work but not at home. Especially since I pay for the most expensive option. I just threw my modem on the floor and put the router on top of the shelf and noticed an instant improvement. Like night and day.

I have had the same problem with time warner. I pay for 10mbs boost and was getting only sometimes 0.25 sometimes 3.5 etc.etc. I tried all the suggestions here and nothing helped. I wanted to go back to AVG anti virus, so I deleted my comodo anti virus and firewall and only run windows firewall> BINGO> SPEED MORE THAN DOUBLED. Speakeasy test from all locations from a low of 10.0 to as high as 19.700 mbs. I run a D-link wired gaming router. If you run a router and Avg anti virus, that's all you need. Comodo is a great program, but not on my system. the router itself is a firewall, so it was just messing up my speed. Those of you have a lot of protected programs installed may want to consider using only what you need and not over doing it like I did.

Thanks so much! I moved my router and modem just a foot further apart and my speedtest doubled!! Great tip!!!

Well, even though that might be A problem...

It's not the solution for me, because my Modem and Router are separated and I am recently now getting a SPEED fluctuation.

My wireless Speed has always been 54 Mbps for like 5 years - never ever changed.

But now (9/23/2010) my Speed goes up and down for no reason.

My wireless Signal Strength is ALWAYS at "Very Good" regardless of the Speed fluctuation.

I find myself always looking outside now to see if anyone is on a laptop trying to break into my wireless network. But no!

Any better ideas??

There may be other wireless networks (or even cordless phones) operating in the same frequency as yours causing degradation of the signal.

I'd try to find other networks in the area, and what channels they're using. You should try to set yours 3 channels apart from others in the area. Most routers come preconfigured to use channel 6.

FOUND A SOLUTION !!

-> The Channel # on your router must be the same as the configuration on your laptop.

1- Every router has a different number - I have Belkin, so I access my router from any browser and type: 192.168.2.1 > Enter.

This will pull up the routers: Cable Gateway Router Setup Utility.

2- Click: Login > Submit. There shouldn't be a password to enter if you have never been there before.

3- Look for wireless channel - see what it is and remember it.

4- On your laptop look for a way to access your wireless network properties.

I have a small icon at the bottom right of desktop, in the taskbar area, near the clock.

5- Go to: Properties > Configure > Advanced.

At the top it might say something like: Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN Properties.

6- Look for something like: "Channel Number" (mine says: WZC IBSS Channel Number).

7- Enter in the same channel number as the router's channel number > ok

!! This is what I think can happen that could switch the channel numbers so the two devices: (router and laptop) Not match !!

I have a wireless house phone (2.4 GHz digital) in the same room as the router, every time it is use, the wireless laptop connection in the other room is knocked off line. So maybe when that happens, it somehow changes the channels.

8- Now get: Network Stumbler

Install it > Run it > It will show all the wireless networks in your area, but it will also show the Channel Numbers that each network is using.

Hopefully the channel number that you picked from using the steps above is not the same as the channels you see from using Network Stumbler.

If your channel is the same, just do the steps again a pick a different channel number that no one is using!!!!!!!!!!!

This has definitely solved my symptoms and I bet it will solve your problems too!

!! FOUND SOLUTION !!

I've tried very hard for a week and a half to get things going with my router ASUS RT N16, even basic wired connection wont work at all, and when I finally did it .. the speed was terrible 1Mbps download !!! And this happened while router-less modem-direct connection was 16Mbps. I was at my wits end. Then I stumbled on this thread, by some miracle I think, and did just that, put them apart, and it worked, back to 16Mbps through the router !!! I should mention also that both were sitting on top of my TV ( old type, not LCD type ). Hurray ! Thanks a million ! It was such a hassle to get things to work !
